Yankees September call ups

Jesus Montero, the Yankees top hitting prospect, has been called up and will DH tonight batting 7th. He will have the next month to make his case for the postseason roster.

The other call ups are OF Chris Dickerson, 3B Brandon Laird, RHP Scott Proctor, RHP Lance Pendleton, and LHP Raul Valdes.

Montero and Proctor were both added to the 40-man roster with Ryan Pope designated for assignment and Justin Maxwell added to the MLB roster and placed on the 60-day DL.

Umenyiora Surgery

Osi Umenyiora underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee earlier this morning and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. That means he will miss the first 2 regular season games against the Redskins and Rams and likely the week 3 game at the Eagles as well. Hopefully Jason Pierre-Paul can continue to show the skills he exhibited in the pre-season opener where he recorded 2 sacks while Umenyiora is on the shelf.

Rodriguez Hoping to Play This Weekend

A-Rod will not be activated for the game tonight and hopes to play this weekend. He struggled in the field in his 2 games in Scranton and feels that he still needs to work on it. It is expected that he will see a good amount of time as the DH once he is activated.

Deon Grant Returns to Giants

Reports today are that Deon Grant has agreed to return to the Giants. Last season he proved valuable as a 3rd safety while providing a veteran presence in the secondary. This is especially good news on the heels of rookie Tyler Sash struggling in coverage against the Panthers on Saturday night.

A-Rod Rehab Update

A-Rod went 1 for 3 with a single tonight in Scranton. He is expected to play one more game there tomorrow night before re-joining the Yankees in Minnesota on Thursday.

A-Rod to Begin Rehab Assignment

A-Rod will DH tonight in Dunedin for the Single A Tampa Yankees against the Dunedin Blue Jays. He is then scheduled to play in the field tomorrow night for 6 or 7 innings. Yesterday Joe Girardi said that he is expected to be back for the series against the Twins beginning Thursday with a slight chance of playing in the series in Kansas City.

Steve Smith Drama

Steve Smith’s deal with the Eagles is for one year at $4 Million with $2 Million guaranteed. There were then conflicting stories as Tom Coughlin said that Smith’s camp promised the Giants that they would keep them informed of offers from other teams while Smith’s agent says that was never the case. Either way, Smith joins Kevin Boss as members of the Giants ’07 rookie class that left the team for more money elsewhere.

There has been a lot of criticism toward GM Jerry Reese for losing key players while at the same time not signing any big names. Tight End looks like a real question mark as right now they are left with Travis Beckum, who is more of a receiving TE, and Bear Pascoe, who converted to FB last year when Hedgecock went down, as the top guys on the depth chart. Undrafted rookie free agent Henry Hynoski is the only FB on the roster and the favorite to be the starter going into the season.
