No deals for Yankees

The non-waiver trade deadline came and went today at 4 PM with the Yankees not making any moves. The is the first time since 1999 that they did not make any trades in the month of July.  There were reports they were somewhat interested in Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez, but he is still due $39 million on the rest of his contract and the Astros would not agree to pick up the 50% the Yankees wanted them to. Bottom line is there were no starting pitching options out there that the Yankees felt would produce any better than Colon and Garcia.

Rafael Soriano to be activated Friday

The Yankees decided before today’s game to hold off on activating Soriano until Friday to give him 2 extra days off after his back to back rehab appearances on Sunday and Monday. Girardi has been non-committal about whether or not he will slide back into the 8th inning role in place of all-star David Robertson.

UPDATE 7/31- When Soriano was activated Chris Dickerson was optioned to AAA and Sergio Mitre was moved to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster.

Giants Running Back News

Reports today are that Brandon Jacobs spoke with the Giants about the possibility of reworking his deal in an effort to free up some money so that they would be able to re-sign Ahmad Bradshaw.

UPDATE 7/28- DeAngelo Williams deal with the Panthers will raise the bar for the asking price of Bradshaw. The deal is worth a reported $43 million over 5 years with $21 million guaranteed.

Jay Glazer is reporting the Dolphins are on the verge of acquiring Reggie Bush from the Saints. This is important because the Dolphins were considered the main competition with the Giants for Bradshaw. Brandon Jacobs was also quoted as saying that he will restructure his contract if he believes the terms are “fair.”

UPDATE 7/29- Brandon Jacobs has agreed to a restructured contract that increases the likelihood that the Giants will be able to re-sign Bradshaw.

Plaxico returning to Giants?

After much speculation that Plaxico Burress would wind up with the Rams or Eagles next year, Adam Schefter says he is in contact with the Giants about a return.

UPDATE 7/27- After reports early this morning that Burress would be visting with the Giants, it has since been clarified that only a teams own free agents can have in person visits until 6 PM on Friday. Chris Mortensen is now reporting that Burress is expected to join either the Giants or the Steelers. His first visit Friday will be with the Giants to have a meeting with Coughlin, so it seems to give the Giants the lead in signing him, as generally speaking in NFL free agency the first team that a player visits will put on the full court press and not allow the player to leave the premises without a deal.
