Umenyiora Surgery

Osi Umenyiora underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee earlier this morning and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. That means he will miss the first 2 regular season games against the Redskins and Rams and likely the week 3 game at the Eagles as well. Hopefully Jason Pierre-Paul can continue to show the skills he exhibited in the pre-season opener where he recorded 2 sacks while Umenyiora is on the shelf.

Deon Grant Returns to Giants

Reports today are that Deon Grant has agreed to return to the Giants. Last season he proved valuable as a 3rd safety while providing a veteran presence in the secondary. This is especially good news on the heels of rookie Tyler Sash struggling in coverage against the Panthers on Saturday night.

Steve Smith Drama

Steve Smith’s deal with the Eagles is for one year at $4 Million with $2 Million guaranteed. There were then conflicting stories as Tom Coughlin said that Smith’s camp promised the Giants that they would keep them informed of offers from other teams while Smith’s agent says that was never the case. Either way, Smith joins Kevin Boss as members of the Giants ’07 rookie class that left the team for more money elsewhere.

There has been a lot of criticism toward GM Jerry Reese for losing key players while at the same time not signing any big names. Tight End looks like a real question mark as right now they are left with Travis Beckum, who is more of a receiving TE, and Bear Pascoe, who converted to FB last year when Hedgecock went down, as the top guys on the depth chart. Undrafted rookie free agent Henry Hynoski is the only FB on the roster and the favorite to be the starter going into the season.

Giants Running Back News

Reports today are that Brandon Jacobs spoke with the Giants about the possibility of reworking his deal in an effort to free up some money so that they would be able to re-sign Ahmad Bradshaw.

UPDATE 7/28- DeAngelo Williams deal with the Panthers will raise the bar for the asking price of Bradshaw. The deal is worth a reported $43 million over 5 years with $21 million guaranteed.

Jay Glazer is reporting the Dolphins are on the verge of acquiring Reggie Bush from the Saints. This is important because the Dolphins were considered the main competition with the Giants for Bradshaw. Brandon Jacobs was also quoted as saying that he will restructure his contract if he believes the terms are “fair.”

UPDATE 7/29- Brandon Jacobs has agreed to a restructured contract that increases the likelihood that the Giants will be able to re-sign Bradshaw.

Kiwanuka to re-sign with Giants, Bernard release

Justin Tuck was actually the first to report on Twitter that DE Mathias Kiwanuka has agreed to terms with the Giants.  Early reports are that it is a 2-year deal.

Earlier in the week several sources reported that DT Rocky Bernard will be released.

O-line Notes

According to Mike Garofolo of the Star Ledger, OL Rich Seubert will be released this week.

Profootballtalk is reporting that C Shaun O’Hara will be released as well.

According to Newsday OL Shawn Andrews will be released after being asked to re-work his contract to make it more salary cap friendly. He was due $7.5 million and was unable to come to an agreement.

One O-lineman is staying put as Kevin Boothe has signed a new 2-year deal.

UPDATE 7/27- The Giants have agreed to terms with former 49er David Baas. He has played guard and center in the past, and once the signing can become official the Giants may shed more light on the exact role he will play.

UPDATE 7/28- According to Jeff Roberts of the Record David Diehl will move from left tackle to left guard, costing him a $750K escalator in his contract for playing tackle. This means that Will Beatty will likely become the new LT.

Steve Smith Update

According to the Daily News WR Steve Smith is willing to return to the Giants on a one-year deal to prove his health and set himself up for a long-term deal next offseason.

Definitely good news if it happens as Eli looked lost at times last year once Smith went down with his pectoral injury. When he is on the field he is Eli’s safety blanket and has a knack for getting 3rd down conversions.
